Sadanam Ramakrishnan

Ramakrishnan is a renowned Chenda artiste in the field of Kathakali.
He completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Kathakali Chenda from Perur Gandhi Seva Sadanam Kathakali Academy and further honed his skills under eminent gurus including Kalamandalam Achunni Pothuval, Sadanam Gopalakrishnan, Kalamandalam Prabhakara Pothuval, Sadanam Vasudevan, and Kalamandalam Balaraman.

Since 1993, he has been serving as a Chenda faculty at his alma mater. In addition to Kathakali, Ramakrishnan is an accomplished performer in Thayampaka and Melam, and a skilled accompanist for classical dance forms such as Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam.

Soumya Satheesh

Soumya Satheesh is one of the leading exponents of the traditional art forms of Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam. Since 1994, she has been running Bharatha Kalamandiram, a well-established dance school in Ernakulam, where she has introduced a large number of young children to the world of classical dance.

Soumya, along with her disciples, has delivered numerous scintillating and well-articulated stage performances, which have been widely appreciated by audiences and covered by the media. She has also choreographed and performed poetic works by eminent poets such as Changampuzha, Sugathakumari, Vailoppilli, A. R. Rajaraja Varma, S. Rameshan Nair, O. N. V. Kurup, and Akkitham.

She began her dance training at the tender age of five under the guidance of Kalamandalam Sridevi Gopinath. Over the years, she has won several awards and accolades, starting from her school days—securing the First Prize in the 1988 State School Kalolsavam and the coveted title of Kalathilakam at the Calicut University Kalolsavam in 1990.

In addition to her achievements in dance, Soumya has also acted in Malayalam and Tamil films, including Nivedyam, Sulthan, Sundara Pandyan, and Pandyanad. Her dedication to promoting classical dance earned her the Kalasagar Award in 2014 for her contributions to Bharatanatyam.

Soumya is the elder daughter of Late Mannanur Unni—a respected teacher and actor in many radio dramas and films—and Rishinaradamanalam Pisharath Kshamadevi. She is married to Killikkurussimangalam Chakrath Pisharath Satish, and they have two children, Adv. Arjun and Nandakrishnan. Her only brother, Sunu R. Pisharody, served as Vice Chairman of Shoranur Municipality and is the owner of the Pisharody Group of establishments, including restaurants, processed food units, and vehicle & auditorium hire services.

Kottakkal Pradeep

Kottakkal Pradeep is a multi-talented Kathakali artiste who skillfully performs all types of roles in the art form and has already made his mark as a writer and composer of attakkathas (Kathakali play scripts).

He was born on 18 May 1986 to Arunadevi of Punchappadath Vadakkeppattu Puthan Pisharam, Sreekrishnapuram Panchayat, and Unnikrishna Pisharody of Karimpuzha Pazhaya Pisharam, in Palakkad district.

Alongside his school education, he underwent about two months of basic Kathakali training under Sri Kalamandalam Kuttikrishnan. After his primary schooling, in August 1997, at the age of eleven, he joined as a Kathakali acting student at PSV Natyasangham, under the aegis of Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal. His debut performance was on 1 February 1998, portraying Lavana in Lavanaasura Vadham during the death anniversary of Vaidyaratnam P.S. Warrier.

Over the next eight years of formal training, he gained extensive stage experience across Kerala and beyond. He then completed an additional three years of higher studies, followed by a one-year temporary appointment, before becoming a permanent actor in the troupe.

He secured first place in the Cholliyattam competitions held at Thrippunithura in December 2003 and in the Sri Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair Memorial Cholliyattam competition in April 2009. His principal gurus include Kottakkal Chandrasekharan Warrier, Kottakkal Kesavan Kundalayar, Kottakkal Vasudevan Kundalayar, Kottakkal Haridasan, Kottakkal Devadasan, and Kottakkal Sudheer.

In 2007, he received the Sri Kottakkal Krishnankutty Nair Endowment. In 2011, under the leadership of Sri Appukuttan Master, he toured North India performing alongside Padma Shri Kalamandalam Gopi Asan.

Apart from acting, Pradeep excels in writing attakkathas. His first work was Chyavana Charitham, followed by Yuyutsu, Drona Charitham, Vyasan, Kaaliyamarddanam, Panchali Swayamvaram, Paundraka Vadham, and Mahaprasthanam, all of which have been staged successfully.

Kottakkal Harishwaran

Mr. Kottakkal Harishwaran is a well-known Kathakali artiste in Kerala.

Though he performs all roles with great dedication, Hari has a special interest in “Thadi” (beard) roles.

He was born on 29 December 1976 to Kuthannoor Pisharath Govindan Kutti Pisharody and Aandam Pisharath Narayanikutty Pisharasiar.

After completing his primary education up to Class 6, he joined the P.S.V. Natyasangham in 1986, along with his elder brother Anil Kumar, to learn Kathakali. His gurus included Krishnan Kutty Nair, Chandrasekhara Warrier, Murali, Nandakumar, and Shambu Embranthiri. In 1987, he made his debut as Lavana in Lavanasuravadham at the Kottakkal Vishwambhara Temple. He then successfully completed the eight-year curriculum and an additional three years of advanced training, and in 1999, he was appointed as a teacher at P.S.V. Natyasangham.

He has also trained in percussion instruments like Chenda and Thimila, making his debut performance in them as well. His Thimila guru was Pulappatta Ramesan.

Hari resides permanently at Nayadippara, Kottakkal. His wife is Pisharath Geethanjali of Vilayil, Areekode, Manjeri.

Krishnapurath Murali

Shri Krishnapurath Murali is a well-known Ottan Thullal artiste.

He began training in Thullal at the age of ten under the traditional Gurukula system from his father. He made his stage debut in 1978. In 1983 and 1984, he won prizes at the school youth festivals. Since then, he has been actively involved in the Thullal art scene for over thirty years.

Through rigorous practice, Murali became a proponent of the style of Payyannur P.K. Pothuval, who was his father’s guru. His performances are known for their expressive character portrayal, distinct body movements, clear gestures (mudras), attractive costumes, meaningful musical rendering with a deep understanding of the lyrics, rhythmic and agile movements, and a sense of humor that never turns into mockery.

He is the son of the renowned Ottan Thullal artiste Kongad Achutha Pisharody.
His mother is Krishnapurath Pisharath Lakshmikutty Pisharassyār (Thangam).
His wife is Jayasree of Alathur Pisharam, Kodakara.
His children, Haripriya and Shruthi Keerthi, are also Thullal artistes.
His siblings are Ravi (brother) and Rajani (sister).

In 2016, he received the Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Pothuval Memorial Kalasagar Award.

Dr. RLV Salini Harikumar

RLV Salini Harikumar is a renowned Mohiniyattam dancer and scholar, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Mohiniyattam at the RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura.

She is the daughter of the legendary Kathakali artiste RLV Damodara Pisharody, under whom she began her training in Kathakali at a very young age. She gave her first performance at the age of six.

Salini’s dance training spans several classical art forms. She began her Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam journey under Natyakalaratnam Kala Vijayan, daughter of the famed Kalyanikuttiyamma. In addition, she has also trained in Kuchipudi, Ottan Thullal, Classical music, and Kathakali music, showcasing her versatility across performance traditions.

She received the junior scholarship for Kathakali from CCRTC and a senior scholarship for two years in Mohiniyattam, further validating her dedication and expertise in classical dance.

An excellent academic performer, Salini Harikumar secured first rank in both her B.A. and M.A. degrees from her alma mater, RLV College. She further pursued M.Phil at Kerala Kalamandalam and went on to earn a Doctorate in Mohiniyattam.

Beyond performance and academics, she is also a writer, contributing numerous scholarly articles and dance-related writings in various journals. She was also a member of the textbook committee for Mohiniyattam under the Karnataka State syllabus framework.

In recognition of her contributions to the field of Mohiniyattam, she was honored with the prestigious Sri Jayadev Rashtriya Puraskar in 2019.

Kottakkal Santhosh

Kottakkal Santhosh is a young and talented vocalist who has made his mark in the field of Kathakali music.

His style blends strong musical foundation with a singing approach perfectly suited to the rhythm and mood of Aattakatha (Kathakali plays). What sets Santhosh apart is his expressive rendering, precision in pronunciation, depth in voice, and adherence to the authentic traditions of Kathakali music.

He trained in Kathakali music under renowned gurus such as Kalamandalam Madambi Subramanian Namboodiri, Kottakkal Narayanan, Kottakkal Madhu, Kottakkal Suresh, and Vengeri Narayanan. His formal music education was completed at Kalamandalam and Kottakkal P.S.V. Natyasangham.

Santhosh also mastered Ashtapadi from Guruvayur Janardanan Nedungadi, and Carnatic music from Kalamandalam Sreedharan Namboodiri.

Santhosh is currently a teacher at Kottakkal P.S.V. Natyasangham. He is the son of Karakkurissi Pisharath Narayana Pisharody and G.P. Vasanthakumari. His wife is Preethi, and they have a son named Anand.

Upendra Babu

Commander R Upendra Babu (Retd)

Commander R Upendra Babu, a retired officer of the Indian Navy, was commissioned into the Engineering Branch in 1993. An alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy, he graduated with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval College of Engineering, INS Shivaji, Lonavla, under the aegis of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. He later completed his M.E in Mechanical/Marine Engineering from the Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, affiliated with Pune University.

He underwent specialized training to be inducted into the Submarine Arm of the Indian Navy and served in several critical appointments, including Operational, Staff, and Training roles. Notably, he served at the Naval Selection Board in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Born into a distinguished family in Kerala, Commander Upendra Babu spent most of his formative years in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He is an alumnus of Kendriya Vidyalayas Malleswaram, ASC, and Jalahalli, as well as BEL College and MES College of Arts, Commerce and Science.

Following his retirement from active service, he transitioned into the corporate and development sectors, leading Learning & Organizational Development (L&OD) initiatives and corporate management training.

He made his literary debut with the novel The Turnouts – Tribute to a Distant Star.”

Commander Upendra Babu is the son of Late K. P. Rabindran of Kizheettil Pisharam, the elder son of the renowned writer Late Cherukad, and Cherukara Pisharath Vilasini. He is married to Sathya, and they have a daughter, Shreya Upendra.

Rajan Sithara

Rajan Sithara, also known as Rajan Raghavan, is a noted Malayalam film director, ace photographer, and versatile artist. He directed two Malayalam feature films – “മന്ത്രിക്കൊച്ചമ്മ” (1998) and “ഭാര്യ വീട്ടിൽ പരമസുഖം” (1999). He also served as an associate director to renowned filmmaker Murali Nair in the short film Arimpara.

In addition to his directorial achievements, Rajan has also proven his mettle as an actor, featuring in A Story That Begins at the End and the Sanskrit-language film Pratikriti, directed by Dr. Nitish Gopi. He has directed several short films, including the well-received Varsham 39.

Expanding his creative pursuits, Rajan has recently taken on the role of a Yajnachaaryan, conducting Bhagavata Saptahams at notable venues such as Kodakara Govindapuram Temple and the Pisharody Samajam Central Office, Thrissur. Since 2020, he has been serving as the Acharyan for the Ramayana Parayanam organised annually by the Samajam through online platforms.

Rajan has also taken a keen interest in Kathakali, undergoing training under Kalanilayam Anilkumar and recently performed his Arangettam.

Sandhya Pisharody

Sandhya Ramesh Pisharody is a gifted Carnatic and Hindustani vocalist, music teacher, and performer based in Mumbai. Hailing from a musically enriched family, her journey into the world of music was a natural progression. She is widely recognized as one of the talented Malayalee singers and music educators in Mumbai today.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English, along with the following music and language qualifications:

  • Vidwan in Sanskrit

Currently, she serves as a music teacher at Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, Juhu, Mumbai.

Sandhya began her teaching career at V.K. Krishna Menon Academy in MHB Colony, under the aegis of the Borivali Malayali Samajam. The school was among the first to formally introduce music and dance as academic subjects. There, she taught light music, patriotic songs in Hindi and English, and Gita chanting.

She also teaches Carnatic music at the Borivali Malayali Samajam Fine Arts, an institution formally inaugurated during Vijayadasami in October 2015. Beyond institutional teaching, she conducts private music lessons across Mumbai and its suburbs and runs her own academy—Sharada Music Academy.

Sandhya is married to Ramesh, son of Manjeeri Pisharath Balakrishnan and Thonnangamath Pisharath Sethulakshmi. They have two sons, Ankit and Archith.
