Col. Dr. V. P. Gopinathan is a renowned Pulmonologist and Chest Specialist, known for his distinguished service in both the Indian Armed Forces and the civilian medical sector. He is the elder son of Late Sukapurath Karunakara Pisharody and Late Vattenat Pisharath Narayanikkutty Pisharasiar.
After passing SSLC with first class, he pursued his higher education at St. Thomas College, Thrissur, and later obtained his MBBS degree from Calicut Medical College. Driven by a commitment to serve, he joined the Indian Army as a Regimental Medical Officer (RMO). Rising through the ranks, he served as Captain, Major, and ultimately retired as a Colonel.
During his military career, he also completed his MD in Pulmonology, and served as a Professor at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), a prestigious institution in military medical education. He retired from the Armed Forces in 1998.
Post-retirement, Dr. Gopinathan continued his medical service as Professor and Head of the Department at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. He also extended his expertise at leading hospitals including Jubilee Mission Hospital, West Fort Hospital, and Mother Hospital, all in Thrissur.
His expertise spans a wide range of pulmonary conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, lung cancer, interstitial and occupational lung diseases, as well as complex lung and pleural infections including tuberculosis, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.
He has been honored as a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP), recognizing his excellence and contribution to the field of chest medicine.
Dr. Gopinathan has also played a significant role in community service. As the President of the Pisharody Samajam, he was instrumental in establishing the organization’s Headquarters building in Thrissur, a milestone achievement during his tenure.
He is married to Shyamala, from Thonnanagamath Pisharam, and they have a daughter, Supriya.
